New Tropical Map Layers in the Aeris Maps Platform

We recently introduced the new Hurricane API, including the tropical cyclones endpoint, within our Aeris Weather API. And while real-time, easy-to-use data is useful, visualizations of that data is what helps tell the story in minimizing storm risks. Today, we are announcing new tropical map layers within the Aeris Maps Platform (AMP). These new tropical map layers allow you to create a variety of tropical weather maps within your own apps and projects. Tropical Cyclones, the Primary Layer The single tropical cyclones layer is the most commonly used tropical layer and displays all active cyclones across the globe, including the Atlantic, East...

Minimizing Tropical Storm Risk With Real-Time Weather Data

by Paul Douglas Meteorologists track storms of all shapes and sizes, but there is nothing quite as awe-inspiring and destructive as a major landfalling hurricane. These Texas-size whirlwinds of trouble produce a weather-trifecta of risk: storm surge, high winds, and inland flooding. Called typhoons in the western Pacific and cyclones in the Indian Ocean, they are identical in structure and formation; drawing warmth from the oceans and converting it into raging spiral bands of shrieking winds and blinding rain. The lighter the winds aloft and warmer the seas, the greater the potential for a cluster of thunderstorms to strengthen into a...

Hurricane API now Available in the Aeris API

Tropical season has started off busy, at least in the Pacific basin, with Category 4 Hurricane Hector, Category 5 Hurricane Lane, and Super Typhoon Maria. The peak of the Atlantic and East Pacific tropical seasons are only a couple weeks away, so we are excited to announce the release of tropical cyclone support within the Aeris Weather API.   The new tropical cyclone endpoints create a great hurricane API that includes global tropical cyclone information within both the Aeris Weather API and our Aeris Mapping Platform (AMP). This blog will be part of a series of entries discussing hurricanes, typhoons, tropical...

Introducing our New Geocolor Satellite

We are excited to announce the new geocolor satellite layer within the Aeris Mapping Platform (AMP). This new satellite layer uses the latest GOES-East imagery to provide pseudo-colorized visible satellite during the daylight hours and infrared satellite overnight. Geocolor satellite imagery can provide high-resolution detail of all types of weather phenomena, such as storms, smoke and snowfall on the ground. Best of all, this new layer is available to all AMP users! Geocolor satellite imagery updates every 15 minutes and can provide for some fantastic animations, as seen in this video of wildfire smoke from British Columbia streaming into Minnesota last...
