Major Hurricane “Delta” Heading Toward Louisiana – New Record Possible for Fewest U.S. Lightning Deaths in 2020?

Intermediate Briefing: Issued late Thursday afternoon, October 8, 2020: Key Points: – Hurricane “Delta” is the 6th tropical system to impact Louisiana in 2020, hitting roughly the same area impacted severely by Hurricane Laura in late August. – Hurricane Delta has strengthened back into a Category 3 storm, growing larger over time with a broad windfield and significant storm surge. – Although not as severe as Hurricane Laura, Hurricane Delta will cause very considerable coastal storm surge flooding as well as flash flooding hundreds of miles inland after landfall in the next 72 hours. – Hurricane Delta is the 5th...

Hurricane Delta May Hit Louisiana as Category 3 – 16 Billion-Dollar Disasters So Far in 2020

NOAA: 16 Separate Billion-Dollar Disasters So Far in 2020 Don’t let anyone living in Louisiana ever give you a hard time about Minnesota weather. Hurricane Delta will be the 6th tropical system in 2020 to impact Louisiana, still recovering from Hurricane Laura’s aftermath in late August. “Delta” will come ashore along the Louisiana coastline late Friday as a major, Category 3 storm, with sustained winds of 120 mph. According to NOAA, there have been 16 billion-dollar disasters in the USA in 2020, 6 of those since June. From unprecedented western fires to hurricanes to 140 mph gusts from an August...

Major Hurricane Delta Threatens Gulf Coast – Can Songbirds Predict Hurricane Energy Potential?

Hurricane Delta Threatens Gulf Coast “Paul, has a hurricane named after the Greek alphabet ever been retired?” According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) that has never happened – and no, any Greek name would be reused in the future. Why is this even relevant? Hurricane “Delta” may deliver a devastating blow to Cancun today before curving north, coming ashore as a major (Category 3+) storm over coastal Louisiana or Texas Friday night. Many small towns in Louisiana still haven’t recovered from Hurricane Laura, which roared ashore August 26. “Delta” is the 25th named storm of 2020. The all-time...

Rachio Added to PWSweather Integrations Center

As we’ve shared before, AerisWeather has relaunched PWSweather with a fresh new look and additional functionality this year. With a rapidly growing station network, we’re excited to announce our new Integrations Center which will highlight the countless applications that permit personal weather station (PWS) owners to take the data collected right in their back yard and pipe it directly into their weather-inclusive app of choice. Today, we’re excited to announce the first entry to the list: Rachio! What is Rachio? Rachio produces Smart Irrigation Controllers and natural lawn care treatments. Whether you have a beautiful lawn or keep a couple...

2020 U.S. Tropical Cyclone Landfalls – 20 Largest California Wildfires on Record

Bursting Our Bubble. After a mild run between roughly October 8-15 GFS guidance suggests a series of cooler fronts as we push into the third week of October – no brutal cold (yet) but a series of (minor) cool frontal passages. California, Wildfires Prompt New Warnings Amid Record Heat, Erratic Winds. Capital Weather Gang has details and perspective: “…California is in the midst of its worst wildfire season on record, with more than 3.9 million acres burned, and five of the Top 20 largest wildfires in state history taking place this year. Scientists say California’s 2020 fire season, and...

NOAA Turns 50 – Are US Power Outages Increasing – Western Infernos

NOAA Turns 50! We can debate which weather models are more accurate, but there’s little doubt (in my mind, at least) that America has the best weather service on the planet. Kudos to the men and women of NOAA who keep us informed, in good weather and bad. Details via NOAA: “Since its inception in 1970, NOAA has evolved into one of the world’s premier science organizations with a mission that spans from the surface of the sun to the floor of the ocean. Our work is incredibly diverse, and it’s difficult to capture everything we do in one place....

Are Long Range Forecasts Getting Better? California Glass Fire Incinerating 1 Acre Every 5 Seconds

A Hopeful Forecast: More Accurate Long-Term Weather Predictions. Good news (for people living in the tropics) but pesky chaos theory quickly comes into play – don’t get your hopes too high too fast. The New York Times (paywall) reports; here’s an excerpt: “...In the ’90s, we had almost no satellite observations in the southern hemisphere,” she said. “Since then, the number and quality of satellite observations has increased substantially,” so our ability to make accurate forecasts in the southern hemisphere is almost as good as in the northern hemisphere. Additionally, the global weather models that are now in development can...

Improved Weather Conditions

In June, we announced the new weather conditions endpoint which went into public beta initially. Since then, we’ve made several improvements to this endpoint which results in much-improved conditions information with the release of our AerisWeather API v1.14. Check out the release history to review the complete list of improvements in this API release. Improved Current Conditions The most popular usage of our new conditions endpoint is to obtain the weather conditions occurring right now for any given location. In this case, just query the conditions endpoint without time parameters or include the for=now parameter: /conditions/minneapolis,mn. Alternatively, use the for parameter: /conditions/minneapolis,mn?for=now. Since we’re now utilizing...

Heat Wave Stokes More Fires Western USA – First Flakes for Northern Minnesota by Saturday

ECMWF total snowfall forecast (Kuchera Method) by next Wednesday courtesy of WeatherBell. A few wet snowflakes may mix in with the rain showers with Saturday’s clipper, but with relatively mild ground temperatures I doubt there will be any accumulation. Cooling Off Again Third Week of October. After a milder than average second week of October GFS guidance above suggests a return to average or slightly cooler than average weather looking out about 2-3 weeks. We’ll see – my confidence level is pretty low things will work out exactly like this. Why the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season Has Spun Out of...

Drought Worsens Over Western USA – New NOAA GEFS Model Upgrade Now Looks Out 35 Days

NOAA Takes Steps To Catch Up to ECMWF For the record, I’d like American Exceptionalism to apply to weather model accuracy. My take: The National Weather Service is the best on the planet, but in recent years the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) has been more accurate. Not perfect, but better than NOAA’s models many days. That may change with the recent overhaul of NOAA’s GEFS (Global Ensemble Forecast System) FV3, which reduces resolution to 25km, with better physics – able to peer out 35 days into the future. Stay tuned, and good luck with all these...
