Deadly Flooding Legacy of “Henri” – Southwest USA’s Most Important River is Drying Up

At the end of the rainbow is a billboard?Paul Douglas Putting a Few Dents In Our Drought Mother Nature is extra-loopy this summer. Now that it’s late August the pattern looks like something I’d expect to see in early June: waves of warm fronts lapping north, each one accompanied by an outbreak of mostly nocturnal thunderstorms. There is a very good chance red blobs will freckle the Doppler today, again Friday, again Saturday night, followed by clearing on Sunday. I’m cautiously optimistic many thirsty lawns and fields will pick up 1-2 inches of rain today, but your results may vary....

How to Display Individual Tropical Cyclones

The tropical season is upon us, with the seasonal peak just a few weeks away. As tropical storms and hurricanes form, our JavaScript SDK’s tropical module is perfect for displaying their track, latest position, and forecast. The Tropical Cyclone Demo displays many of the Tropical Module’s capabilities, showing users how AerisWeather can display tropical cyclones in real time. As we approach the seasonal peak in the Atlantic basin, there are often multiple active systems that may have overlapping tracks and five-day forecasts, such as this weekend, with Tropical Storm Fred and Tropical Storm Grace:   As seen, displaying tropical cyclones on a map can highlight overlapping...

Tracking “Fred” – Racial Realities of Urban Heat Island – Key Takeaways of Latest UN IPCC Climate Report

Scientists React To Latest IPCC Report Every IPCC climate report becomes a little more dire with time as scientists draw a straight line from a doubling of planet-warming greenhouse gases since 1850 to an increase in weather extremes. During a WCCO Radio interview Tuesday, St. Thomas climate scientist John Abraham reacted to the report. “It’s unequivocal, humans are causing the warming. We are now seeing the impact on our weather. It is too late to avoid climate change, but what we’re trying to do now is avoid the worst of climate change” he said. The uptick in weather disasters is...

Unseasonable Warmth for Central USA While Category 4+”Eta” Threatens Central America

Second or Third Warmest Election Day on Record for MSP. There’s a pretty good chance the official high will reach 68F, the second warmest November 3 on record in the Twin Cities. Graphic: Twin Cities National Weather Service. Moderately Cold by Mid-November. Jet stream winds buckle within 1-2 weeks with more Canadian than Pacific air infiltrating the USA, pushing any lingering warmth into far southern states. It was a good run whileit lasted, I guess. Super Typhoon Goni Slams into Philippines as Strongest Landfalling Tropical Cyclone on Record. Dr. Jeff Masters has eye-opening statistics about the mega-hurricane that just hit...

Rapid Ocean Warming Poses New Challenges for Tropical Cyclone Prediction

Better Hurricane Forecasts Will Require Near-Real-Time, Deep Ocean Monitoring “How many more eyewall replacement cycles before landfall? Let me check the latest real-time, deep ocean temperature anomalies first”. This scenario may not be as far-fetched as it sounds. Recent studies confirm warming of the world’s oceans is taking place faster than previously estimated; as much as 40% faster than the United Nations estimated in 2015. The implications of warming seas include stronger and more rapidly-intensifying hurricanes and more extreme rainfall amounts. Research confirms roughly 93% of the additional warming from man-made greenhouse gases is going into the world’s oceans. Climate...

Tropical Cyclones Archive with AerisWeather Android SDK

The latest update to the AerisWeather Android SDK brings another addition to the supported AerisWeather API endpoints. In v2.6.0 we’ve added support for the Air Quality, Air Quality Forecast, and Tropical Cyclones Archive endpoints. In the next few paragraphs, we’ll discuss working with the Tropical Cyclones Archive data and step into a few code examples. The Air Quality endpoints will be covered in an upcoming article in the near future. Tropical Season Continues Globally There is only a couple of months remaining in the Atlantic hurricane season, yet another storm reminds us that we’re not done with Tropical Cyclones yet....

Tropical API Archive Now Available

With the traditional peak of the tropical season underway, we have been busy with the release of the new tropical API addition to the AerisWeather API and new tropical map layers within the AerisWeather Maps Platform (AMP). Together, these products can better prepare you for imminent threats from tropical cyclones and help reduce storm risks when utilized within organizations. Today, we are excited to announce the addition of archive data for tropical cyclones to the new tropical API. Using data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), our API includes information for tropical cyclones starting...

New Tropical Map Layers in AerisWeather Maps

We recently introduced the new Hurricane API, including the tropical cyclones endpoint, within our AerisWeather API. And while real-time, easy-to-use data is useful, visualizations of that data is what helps tell the story in minimizing storm risks. Today, we are announcing new tropical map layers within AerisWeather Maps. These new tropical map layers allow you to create a variety of tropical weather maps within your own apps and projects. Tropical Cyclones, the Primary Layer The single tropical cyclones layer is the most commonly used tropical layer and displays all active cyclones across the globe, including the Atlantic, East Pacific (West Coast of...
